Periodic reminder that the window of opportunity for moderate solutions on climate was slammed shut in favor of oil company profits for 30 years and now all of the options are extreme.

$1.5T and 3.5 degrees you walking lump of coal
Asked Manchin about this topline just now as he headed into a one-on-one meeting with Sanders (!) “I’m at 1.5!” Manchin shouts.

The world’s most influential energy body has for the first time put a net-zero scenario at the heart of its forecasting. The IEA has always positioned itself as a rational actor focusing on ‘realistic’ development pathways and security of supply' climatechangenews.com/2021/1…

Manchin makes $500,000 a year from the coal industry that he's protecting. It is as naked a conflict of interest as you will ever see in politics. And somehow he's been able to skate through this entire process *without being asked about it*. The "moderate" label is a forcefield.

The number of people who say "your work inspired all of this [highly paid] project, thank you much" like it's a compliment and not an admission of theft is really something.

$300 billion over a decade for climate change measures is $30 billion per year The U.S. spends roughly $20 billion a year on fossil fuel subsidies alone brookings.edu/research/refor…

They’re looking at “community college scholarships.” Also Medicare expansion is still on the table, as is universal pre-K and ACA funding. Dems had discussed with Biden $300B for climate change measures — but it’s not clear how that shakes outs. Price tag: Around $2T

This seems like a good time to remind folks that the modeling done around the last climate half-measure we nearly passed (Waxman-Markey, aka Cap and Trade) showed that it’s most ambitious implementation would have still left us with 4+ degrees of warming.

The excellent @ArtsPro have caught the @sciencemuseum red-handed failing to use their chosen tool to measure their new sponsor’s climate commitments - because #Adani Group would fail it! 1/3

If anybody feels like digging into exactly why the @sciencemuseum decision to let Adani splash their name all over its climate exhibition is so disgusting, here’s something I wrote about the Carmichael Mine for @THEMONTHLY in 2019. themonthly.com.au/issue/2019…

A carbon tax would be less popular, more complicated, and filled with more loopholes than the CEPP. It's not a plan B, it's a plan F.
it's a fiction that Manchin would get behind a carbon tax, with even less consensus on how to implement and how to price. I haven't seen any reason to believe Dems are seriously pursuing a carbon tax. nytimes.com/2021/10/16/clima…

Johnson & Johnson filed in court last week to split its Baby Powder from the rest of the company. Why? J&J knew asbestos laced some bottles but kept it a secret for decades. Tens of thousands of women with ovarian cancer are suing, and the company wants to shield its assets.

The climate emergency has ascended up the news agenda, but many advertisers have climate-related terms on their "block lists"–effectively stymieing climate journalism funding, at a time when newsrooms need to increase it. By @larakiara in @thisisinsider businessinsider.com/publishe…

A stunning and haunting piece that really sees the people at its center and exposes the grief and indignity baked into the ways we deal with displacement. There is more of this horror in store if we don't build new systems to adapt washingtonpost.com/nation/20…

The fossil fuel industry must be held accountable for its efforts to downplay the climate crisis. I’m bringing six CEOs from the oil & gas industry before @OversightDems for the first time in history to answer for their role in spreading disinformation. teenvogue.com/story/fossil-f…
