The goal of the foil wrap on the trees is NOT to prevent crown fire. Rather it is to prevent two sources of damage that can occur even during low severity fire - fire entering the trunk through old fire scars (cat faces) and fire damaging the roots through deep heat pulses.

Still, that only looks like it’s about ~8’ (given 6’ firefighters). I don’t know what wildfire temperatures are like at various heights off the ground, so maybe the bottom 8’ is crucial? Anyway, I have to imagine the tree will come though it fine (it’s seen a lot). I hope so.

If I understand Sequoias at all, not an expert by any means they are some of the more fire resistant trees around. It could be that more danger to the tree's health occurs at the base.

What if Sherm's branches catch fire?

They'll regrow, the most critical part of the tree is the base, also because it's a very famous tree it needs a little extra protection, if the fire gets to the routes it will do significant damage, whilst that's very unlikely it's still much better to put foils

Still doesn't seem high enough. Why wouldn't they bring in cherry-pickers to get higher up? Hoping for the best...

The trees are fire resistant, have you ever burnt a thick log on a fire, say 2 feet in diameter? Ever taken it off the next morning and chopped it in half, the middle is still perfectly fine, the fire has only gone about 2 to 3 inches deep usually.

These trees literally reproduce from fire. Why stand in the way of Mother Nature: Forrest fires are the reason Sherman stands today

Low intensity fires yes, this is not that. Look to the castle fire to see how high intensity fire completely decimates them.
