The @FridayForFuture coalition, in collaboration with @sciforfuture, today demanded that the new government of Germany quantify within the first 100 days a remaining CO2 budget compatible with 1.5 degrees, the goal agreed by all parties negotiating to form that government.

They announced this in the famous dinosaur hall of Berlin's Museum of Natural History. All laws and infrastructure projects are to be independently evaluated wrt compatibility with that CO2 budget. Scientific reference made again to our @Umweltrat CO2 budget.

When an old neighbour stops by to give me a few late fruits from the garden: some small olives, three figs and a quince. (Note we're at 52.4 degrees North). 🌱

Two things are essential if a socio-ecological transformation is to succeed: real power and money. How sustainabilty will be anchored in the power structures of a new government is critical. The same holds for the principles of who controls finance: they have veto powers.

So next to questions like a mobility transformation (not treated much in the sounding paper), how to curb misinvestments into "bridge" technologies and how to operate on the EU level, eg regarding ETS and fiscal stance, where and how transformative policies are organised is key.

If coordination of sustainabilty remains with the chancellory rather than with a more diverse structure across ministries, would that be credible under social dem leadership? If the liberals were to have finances, would they support or hinder transformative investment/tax?

It is notable that neither of these topics has been outlined in the sounding paper - but coalition negotiations are just beginning. How these things play out will say a lot. So let's not just focus on goals and targets - but on how a new government is organised across fields.

Another ranger killed, 31, leaving behind wife and 2 children, protecting what is one of the most precious hotspots of biodiversity in Africa. More than 150 rangers have been killed in the last 15 years. Their service includes advancing sustainable solutions in the region.
It is with great sadness that Virunga National Park announces the death of ranger BIZIMANA KARABARANGA Emery: bit.ly/3mWZkvN C’est avec une grande tristesse que le Parc National des Virunga annonce le décès du garde BIZIMANA KARABARANGA Emery: bit.ly/2YPGO0x

Yesterday we discussed here what to recommend to a next German government - and I was criticized by some for my stance - but today the prospective coalition partners (social dems, greens and liberals) delivered, publishing their first joint document. m.tagesspiegel.de/downloads/…

And it reflects what we at SRU & many others recommended: * 1.5 degrees path is "central task" * exiting coal "ideally by 2030" * end of fossil cars in D before 2035 * 2% area for wind, solar on all rooftops Some bridging compromises: efficient gas plants - but ready for H2.

Of course words are words and reality will be in one thing only: the decline of actual CO2 emitted & it's relation to the remaining CO2 budget. That discussion therefore remains centrally important - not as an instrument but as an independent yardstick for success or failure.

1/n Six criteria for judging whether a next German government is serious about sustainability. Looking ahead, we at @umweltrat last Dec. published "Sustainabilty, a task of historic dimensions: Putting Germany on a path to an ecological future". My summary (sorry for a long 🧵):

The town itself is situated on an island in the Havel river; the cathedral is on the Northern banks beyond the river. Despite being so far inland, these cities were members of the Hanseatic League. Unfortunately, today's traffic too often bypasses these historical landscapes.
