Women also play central roles in the politics of the Rojava. Gender quota’s have been instituted which mandate that women must have at least 40% percent representation in politics. The highest executive position in Rojava is currently co-chaired by a woman named Îlham Ehmed.

Jineology was created by PKK founder and spiritual leader, Abdullah Öcalan, who continues to be revered within the PKK. He was captured in a 1999 joint CIA-Turkish operation in Kenya and is currently serving a life sentence on the isolated Turkish prison island of İmralı.

In order to defeat ISIL in northern Syria, U.S forces reluctantly partnered with the Kurdish-led SDF providing billions in military aid and air support. That support began to fade once ISIL had been largely defeated in the region.

The U.S continues to have a substantial presence in Rojava. Somewhere between 900-3000 troops are currently believed to be stationed in Syria. Reports also reveal that a little known U.S oil company ‘Delta Crescent Energy’ has signed a contract to extract oil from the Rojava.

Having lost American support, Rojava now looks to solidify ties with Syria and Russia as a counter to Turkey. Though the violence has calmed since 2019, tensions remain high as American, Turkish, Russian, Syrian and Kurdish soldiers find themselves in an increasingly complex war.
